Accelerating Marine Protection
in the Dominican Republic

Working closely with a diverse array of stakeholders—including the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic, scientists, donors, and partner organizations—I helped advance a marine conservation initiative aimed at increasing the protection of migratory pathways for marine species and conserving delicate marine ecosystems in the Dominican Republic. As part of this project, I maintained a record of budget allocations, facilitated strategic meetings with stakeholders, managed sub-contractors, and helped develop strategies to address challenges. My role extended to managing relationships and supporting the development of a communications strategy, including design of strategic media events to effectively convey the importance of this conservation effort. The impact of this project is causing a ripple effect and sparking a wider conversation—and action—to scale up multinational marine protection across the Caribbean.

Advancing Support for the Historic High Seas Treaty

I worked closely with the international ocean team at NRDC and contributed to the collective effort that secured the adoption of the High Seas Treaty. Throughout this multi-year project, I helped drive impactful communications initiatives designed to strategically increase engagement with key governments and drum up support for this historic international agreement. My responsibilities included developing communications strategies, supporting the planning and execution of high-level events and meetings, and leading the production of digital campaign materials, including social media content and compelling videos showcased at major international conferences, in order to drive and amplify the reach of our marine conservation narrative. In addition, I was responsible for defining key messages, managing project budgets allocation, and recruiting and leading a team of sub-contractor creatives, ensuring seamless content development in alignment with project objectives.

Making Ocean Conservation
History in Panama

Working closely with scientists, partner organizations, and the Government of Panama, I led a multi-year communications project that supported the Government of Panama's bold vision to achieve the 30x30 target by protecting 30% of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in 2021, and then surpass it in 2023 when it established the protection of 54% of its EEZ. As project lead, I developed compelling narratives, distilled complex scientific concepts into accessible messages for diverse audiences (in English and Spanish), cultivated and maintained key relationships—including with Panama's Ministries of Environment and Foreign Affairs— and worked closely with a team of creatives to develop a set of compelling communications materials. Our success on this project was evidenced by the widespread reach of our deliverables, and the successful announcement video we showcased at the opening ceremony of Our Ocean 2023, in front of heads of state and other high-level government officials, which prompted significant earned media coverage and positioned Panama as a pioneering leader in the protection of marine biodiversity.

Increasing Protection for Sharks in Landmark Decision

I played a key role in the collective effort to advance proposals to regulate the international trade in sharks and shark products ahead of the 19th Conference to the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As a project manager, I was responsible for leading a coalition of 8 partner organizations and co-develop strategies to enhance outreach efforts and generate support from key governments in Latin America whose potential opposition to the proposals posed a significant threat to securing protection for sharks. This complex and wide-ranging initiative, led by the Wildlife Conservation Society and IFAW, provided me with a unique opportunity to act as a liaison between the world's leading shark conservation experts and boots-on-the-ground organizations, fostering the effective flow of communication and cohesive alignment between strategies. In addition, my work extended to helping develop digital and offline communications activations and campaign materials (e.g., press releases, FAQ documents, explainer videos, social media content) to raise awareness and educate the public about the critical role that sharks play in healthy marine ecosystems. Our collective effort resulted in the full regulation of the deeply unsustainable shark fin trade.
